Morality in Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter Essay -- Scarlet Letter ess
Morality in The Scarlet Letter à à à "...pain is in itself an evil; and indeed, without exception, the only evil; or else the words good and evil have no meaning." (Chase 127) In the novel The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne presents a very clear view of his stand on morality, which he carefully cultivates through the course of the story. The moral, which is "Be true!" applies equally well to all of the characters in the novel. Though his view does seem to stand as true through the length of the story, it does not, unfortunately, transfer as smoothly to our lives today. In essence it is a hedonistic view to take, which requires a slight stretch as to his interpretation as to how evil, and important, an individual's pain is unto itself. By looking at each of the main characters in turn, it may be determined exactly what his view was on this subject, and how it may be applied to life in our society today. à Because his moral is more explicitly defined as "Be true! Be true! Be true! Show freely to the world, if not your worst, some trait by which your worst may be inferred!" Hester Prynne is a sound example, for she did exactly that. She could not, and did not, hide her sin, and as a result wore it clearly at all times on her breast, hiding nothing. While at first it may seem as though she was punished more than any other character, because she was so physically punished, Hawthorne makes it clear that she was the most satisfied character in the novel, eventually finding peace with herself because she had no pressing secrets to gnaw at her conscience. Physically, however, the Puritan imposition of punishment was harsh, and unyielding. It brought her below many of the men and women of the town, and had the psychologic... .... 47-49). Nixon and the Happenstances that Brought Him to Nix Essay
On the fateful night of eighth of August in 1974, President Richard M. Nixon announced his resignation from his office due to the pertinent issue that he was facing. According to his resignation speech, he has to leave his office because the Congress has lost its faith on him, and because of that he cannot pursue the completion of his term of office. In his resignation speech, Nixon explicitly stated that he will vacate the White House at exactly twelve oââ¬â¢clock noon the next day, and that his office will be officially entrusted with Vice President Gerald R. Ford. On that fateful night, Nixon uttered the following words ââ¬Å"that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America,â⬠[1] which is considered by his critics as partly true and partly as an escape goat for an imminent impeachment against him. (1) à à à à à à à à à à à à In American history, Nixon is the first president who surrenders his authority and stature. What are the circumstances that led an esteemed president to his fall down? It was common belief that a president would only be forced to leave his office for two significant reasons: first, if he is a lousy president, regardless if he is innately a good person, his lousiness will bring forth the end of his term, and second, if he is an exceptional president but catapulted an extraordinary scandal that no one can forgive, his days on the White House will definitely be numbered. (2) And in the case of Nixon, he committed the latter. à à à à à à à à à à à In this paper, I will outline how a seemingly invincible president was crushed down. I will also give nitty-gritty details of Watergate scandal, which is the root of Nixonââ¬â¢s fall down from his office. But let me first provide a brief exposition of Nixonââ¬â¢s autobiographical account of his presidency. The Anthology of Humble Beginnings à à à à à à à à à à à Nixon started his political journey when he became a part of United States of House of Representatives in 1946. But it was only in 1948 that his name was propelled with respect and adoration in the public eye due to his discovery of Alger Hissââ¬â¢ conspiracy with Soviet Union. In 1950, he won the senatorial race outwitting Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas, in which he has a well publicized rivalry. During this senatorial race, Nixon was named as Tricky Dick because he labeled the congresswoman as the Pink Lady. (1) à à à à à à à à à à à In 1952, Nixon achieved new heights in his political career because he was elected as the 36th vice president of our country. But before he assumed this position, he faced a scandal about malversation of public funds, which led the Democrats and the Republicans in requesting President Eisenhower to eliminate him of their party. Nixon being a good speaker convinced Eisenhower and the public that his conscience is clean and that he is indeed credible for the position after reciting his Checkers speech in the television. (1) à à à à à à à à à à à In Nixonââ¬â¢s journey there were some fiascos along his way. In 1960, he joined the presidential race against President John F. Kennedy, which led to his first disappointment in his political career. He experienced another disappointment after losing his candidacy in the race for Governor of California. (1) à à à à à à à à à à à But in every storm there will always be rainbow. When Nixon successfully established a strong political party in the guise of what he called ââ¬Å"silent majorityâ⬠, his political comeback is already certain. In 1969, he became the 37th president of the United States of America upsetting Hubert H. Humphrey with less one percent of the poll. His triumph is due to his promise of ending the Vietnam War, in which he fruitfully put into a realization. With his creation of Nixon Doctrine, he delivered peace not only with Vietnam but with China and Soviet Union as well. (3) à à à à à à à à à à à But everything must come down to its end. And this is exactly what happens to Nixonââ¬â¢s political journey when the Watergate scandal started to come out. This time there was nothing he can do to save his diminishing credibility. The Anatomy of Watergate Scandal à à à à à à à à à à à Watergate is nothing but a plain lavish establishment erected in Washington D.C. that doesnââ¬â¢t spell any scandal. But in 1972, it changed our perception of the hotel because it embodies Nixonââ¬â¢s myriad of under the table activities. The beginning of these Watergate activities can be traced back in 1969 when he and Henry Kissinger attempted to stop the leaking of his administrationââ¬â¢s shenanigans by wire tapping the phones of several journalists and those officials against who were against him. These Watergate wrongdoings also include the housebreak of Dr. Lewis Fielding in an effort to acquire his psychiatric records, which transpired in 1971; the FBI probing on CBSââ¬â¢ Daniel Horr in 1971; and the investigation of G. Gordon Liddyââ¬â¢s discussion of Jack Anderson assassination also in 1971.(3) à à à à à à à à à à à But it was in the seventeenth of June 1972 at around two in the morning that all of these activities where discovered, when five of his men were caught burglarizing the Democratic Partyââ¬â¢s headquarters located at Watergate hotel.à According to documents, Frank Mills, a guard in Watergate hotel, was doing his inspection of the place when he found a piece of tape preventing a door from latching. He removed the tape, only to found out later that the door was re-taped. Out of curiosity, Mills phoned the police about the matter. At around 2:30 in the morning, five men were caught installing wire tapping paraphernalia and taking pictures of some document causing them to be arrested.(2) à à à à à à à à à à à These men were later identified as Bernard Barker, Virgilio Gonzalez, Eugenio Martinez, Frank Sturgis, and James W. McCord Jr., and proven to have a connection with Nixon. During the arraignment of these burglars, Washington Postââ¬â¢s Bob Woodard overheard some pertinent information from McCord, which led for his own investigation, and later on he discovered that McCord was part of Committee to Re-Elect the President (CRP) security force. As the scandal went on, the link between the Watergate event and the White House was finally established when E. Howard Huntââ¬â¢s phone number was found in Barkerââ¬â¢s notebook. (2) à à à à à à à à à à à According to investigations, Hunt and Liddy served as watchers outside the hotel, wherein both of them were guarding outside the vicinity and communication with the burglars inside Watergate hotel, and later on, it was realized that both were members of ââ¬Å"The Plumbersâ⬠. John Ehrlichman was the brainchild of The Plumbers, which is designed to ensure that impossibility of any leakage in Nixonââ¬â¢s office and to destroy the Democrats. (2) à à à à à à à à à à à Nixonââ¬â¢s forces tried damage control through cover-ups, alibis and denials. Jeb Magruder, L. Patrick Gray of FBI along with others obliterated all significant documents and denied all allegations regarding the scandal. In a desperate attempt to control the situation, Nixon asked White House Chief of Staff Robert Haldeman to do his own probing on the case arguing that it might interfere with the CIA operation, but this investigation was planned so that can get hold of the CIA. (2) à à à à à à à à à à à Woodard along with Carl Bernstein continued there research on the scandal until they found a formidable source inside the White House, whom they labeled Deep Throat. According to their reports, Deep Throat only confirmed all the information that they have gathered with regards to Watergate scandal. In 2005, W. Mark Felt validated that he was behind Deep Throat secret identity. (4) à à à à à à à à à à à In the progression of the scandal, Nixon was re-elected from presidency, and two months after his re-election, the five burglars pleaded guilty while McCord and Liddy were convicted of conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping in Judge John Siricaââ¬â¢s trial. Things get out of control as time went by. His underlings started to backstab each other, some of them blackmailed him, and worst of all they left Nixon in the verge of his insurmountable predicament. (4) à à à à à à à à à à à But the biggest mistake he committed happened when he fired Archibald Cox along with some of his subordinate. This incident on the twentieth of October 1973 was known as the Saturday Night Massacre provoked the first serious attempts to Nixonââ¬â¢s impeachment. The first impeachment trial was heard on the ninth of May. But his last straw was pulled out when the smoking gun tape was listened on the fifth of August 1974. The tape disclosed Nixonââ¬â¢s approval to hush money for Hunt who blackmailed him for releasing his part on the Watergate scandal. It also exposed that Nixon asked CIA to speak with the FBI for dropping the investigation on Pigs of the Bay. (1) à à à à à à à à à à à The realization of imminent impeachment led Nixon to file his resignation. But he made sure that his exit will be redeeming. In a national television, he announced his resignation with words of a dignified man by stating ââ¬Å"By taking this action, I hope that I will have hastened the start of the process of healing which is so desperately needed in America.â⬠At the end of his speech, he never admitted any act of wrongdoing. The next day, at exactly twelve noon, he left White House and Vice President Ford filled the left position. And on the eight of September, one month after the televised address, President Ford freed Nixon from all of his political crimes. (2) à BIBILIOGRAPHY: 1.) He had traveled to Italy and watched with interest as city dwellers would stop to begin the day at a coffee bar. Using the same type of model, Schultz purchased and opened his first location as Il Giornale. The company evolved into Starbucks, where multitudes of consumers began purchasing designer coffees, such as espresso, cappuccino, and coffee mocha. Store interiors encourage lounging and relaxing with a newspaper, magazine, laptop, or friends. Each cafe featured enticements such as jazz music in the background, additional merchandise to examine, and comfortable seating. (Reilly, Minnick, Baack, 2011). Until the 2008 recession, Starbucks had continued to grow. Some of the units in larger cities experimented with selling additional products, including lunch service. Then a quickly collapsing economy, possibly coupled with other problems, including over expansion, sent the corporation on a downhill slide. Founder Howard Schultz worried that the addition of so many locations had watered down the Starbucks experience. Reilly, Minnick, Baack, 2011).. Starbucks should be using is departmentalization by geographic region. Starbucks locations are all over the United States. According to our text, ââ¬Å"Geographical departmentalization makes it possible to tailor managerial efforts that address territorial differences. â⬠(Reilly, M. , Minnick, C. , Baack, D. , 2011). Departmentalization can be defined as an effective organi zational tool in that it involves dividing people up into different departments or divisions in which collections of tasks are placed together, such as accounting, marketing, and production. Going through Starbucks case study, the best suited departmentalization for Starbucks would be by Geographic Region. Starbucks has its financial affairs, legal affairs separated from stores. It has also added talent management, human resources and training and development as part of being specialized departments. This structure works, because it is separated from day to day business and does not interfere with store operations. This will help in the different locations to adapt the menu to accommodate. For example the Starbucks in Florida may sale more ice coffees than in Washington State where it is not as hot. When the increase of competition began the decline of sales for Starbucks, the leadership shouldnââ¬â¢t try to centralize power. With the leadership being centralized the organization may start making bad decisions because it only allows for two or three leaders to be overwhelmed and start making wrong decisions, where as if they were to have more ideas from their employees they may be able to come up with a structure that can help them through the decline of sales The configuration that best fits Starbucks would have to be the divisional organization. This is because Starbucks has different products and many business units all around the world. According to an article, Mintzbergââ¬â¢s Organizational Configurations, ââ¬Å"The benefit of the divisional organization is that it allows the line managers to maintain more control and accountability. â⬠(Mindtools, 2012). In conclusion, Starbucks organizations have been a great place for people to work, customers to hang out at, and overall a great place to have coffee. From what I see, the structure that Starbucks has been using, so far has been doing a good job. Several health care organizations are going to take initiative for public awareness ("A retrospective case-control study of ladder fall accidents", 2002). VicHealth is trying to raise fund for Public Awareness Campaign to reduce the numbers of Ladder falls. However, due to lack of proper information, this public awareness programs cannot be implemented properly. There is no particular reason behind the fall from ladder and there is no particular place of fall. To reduce the chance of ladder fall in workplaces training are provided to the employees but in domestic situation public awareness programs are initiated ("A scenario analysis of ladder fall accidents", 2002). There is certainly significance behind conducting this study. Almost 582 cases are registered, who are admitted in the Alfred Hospital of Australia due to ladder fall. Among them 58 patients are admitted in the ICU and 15 of them are dead within the period of Five years (Animal caretaker breaks arm and wrist after ladder fall, 2011). In average almost 120 people are injured in ladder fall. Therefore, it is necessary to judge the reason behind such incident. Often the researcher is trying to find out the reason behind this fall and they conclude with that patients are often unable to get back their real life. The reason behind their fall is lack of techniques, improper footwear, lack of training, and bad condition of ladders (Astley, 2006). Research question and Aims and hypothesis Research Question: What are the reasons behind ladder fall? Who are mainly affected by this? How the victims are suffering due to the ladder fall? Hypothesis: While conducting the research, the researcher is going to face several aspects of the research. Here, the researcher is trying to sum up all the supposition in form of hypotheses (Biddle Emmett, 2011). Researcher here mainly concentrates on two types of research hypothesis one is null hypothesis and another is Alternative hypothesis. H0: Public Awareness Campaign can mitigate the chance of ladder fall by providing them training. H1: Public Awareness Campaign cannot mitigate the chance of ladder fall by providing them training Method with information on the research design Between two types of research approaches, researcher is going to concentrate on the Primary Research Approach; the reason behind selecting the primary research approach enables the researcher to understand the in-depth view regarding the topic (Cohen Lin, 2001). In case of the primary research approach, the researcher will focus on the interviews to the respondents. Between qualitative and quantitative research process, researcher is going to undertake Quantitative research process for the evaluation of data. Quantitative research approach mainly has two section one is primary and another is secondary, and researcher is going to concentrate on both (Fall from ladder, 2006). For primary quantitative analysis, researcher is going to take help of the respondents. Before that, researcher has to form a close-ended questionnaire to judge the point of view of the respondents (Freeman, 2003). Statistical data will be analysed in this scenario for the better analysis of the topic. For secondary data, researcher will take help of the bars, charts and diagrams, which help to understand the details of the topic. After understating research approaches, research should concentrate on the research philosophy. Positivism and realism are two research philosophies that help the research in the process of analysis (Hagger, 2002). As researcher is going to take help of the Mixed Research Approach to gather data; for two types of data (primary and secondary), research should choose Descriptive Research Design for analysis of the Primary research approach and Exploratory Research Design for the secondary research approach. Exploratory research Design correctly goes with the Secondary quantitative research approach, as it helps to explore new statistical information. Along with that, researcher should focus on the strategies, for the further analysis of the research; researcher is going to choose Quantitative Research Strategies ("II. GENERAL METHODOLOGY", 2011). For the Quantitative Research Strategy takes help from the questionnaire, statistical data and interviews. Research Process Here for the analysis of the research, researcher will use Mixed Approach to conduct the research as researcher is going to take help from the primary and secondary quantitative data. More specifically, researcher is going to take help of the quantitative analysis only for the better analysis of the paper. Both types of data enable the researchers peep through the findings (Jha, 2008). For sampling researcher has to choose respondents from different sectors. The sectors can be fire service or civil or any other sectors where ladders are used particularly. For respondents, researcher can choose the family members of the victims also and witness can be the respondents also (Ketchen Bergh, 2004). Therefore, researchers should take helps of the Probability Sampling; probability sampling enables the researchers to collect respondents from any sectors. Simple Random Sampling is going to undertake for the better analysis of the research. Here, researchers do not have to face any kind of boundaries to choose respondents (Keys, 2008). Simple random sampling is the significant part of the probability sampling and according to this process; researcher can ask a set of questions to any group of male and female. 100 respondents will be chosen for the analysis of the paper. Respondents can be hospital staffs, doctors, victims, family members of victims and managers of organization. Dissemination of findings For determining the result, the researcher can take help of the Pilot study, which helps the researcher to predict the result of the research. For the successful analysis of the research, researcher will take help of both types of research approaches. For successful analysis of the research, the researcher should read the books, journals and articles. From the analysis of the books, journals and articles, researcher can able to gather contradictory knowledge on the particular topic. In journals, articles and books point of view of different personalities are imprinted. From different views, researcher can able to understand the in-depth analysis of the papers. For Secondary quantitative dada analysis, researcher should focus on the statistical data from the Alfred hospital and many other working sectors. Prime drawback of this research approach is to gather data from the domestic situation. For Primary quantitative research approach, researcher has to form close-ended questionnaire. Bars, charts, pie-charts and diagrams help to gather accurate data. In case of the secondary quantitative data, researcher cannot able to gather accurate data but in case of the primary Quantitative research Approach, researcher can able to gather accurate information regarding the topic. Ethical Considerations There are several ethical factors, on which researcher should focus. It is the sole responsibility of the researchers to abide by the ethical considerations. Researcher should ask for the permission of the respondents before asking them any questions (Kothari, 2004). Besides, at the time of formation of the research questions, researcher should look after that questions are not personal or hurt emotion of anyone. Confidentiality is the main ethical consideration; while collecting information, researcher should make promise that no personal data of respondents are going to be explored (Kumar, 2005). Apart from these, it is the sole responsibility of the researchers to conclude the research within the specific time and allotted money. Ethical consideration is necessary for shaping the entire research. There should definitely have some rules, which guide the researcher to understand the differences between the rights and wrong (Newman Benz, 2008). Honesty is the integral part of every research paper; researcher should run the entire research ethically. Researcher should conduct the entire research ethically and honestly report the results. The role of the researchers is based on certain objectivity like the researcher should avoid biasness while analysis of data and interpretation of data (OSullivan, et al, 2004). In case of the peer review and personnel decision, researcher should run the entire process ethically. Biasness should be mitigated as it can affect the research process. Besides, integrity is the inevitable part of every research project. Researcher should not make any false promises and should avoid agreements breaching (Popping, 2012). Personal data should not be revealed at any cost; researcher should be solely devoted to his or her job, there should not be any complex issues. On the other hand, researcher should maintain the consistency of the research project, so it is the sole responsibility of the researcher to maintain the consistency of action and thought. Carefulness is the integral part of every research paper, while gathering data, researcher should be more careful to avoid error and negligence. At the time of carrying pit the research, the researcher should focus on the work of the peers also to avoid the risk factors. References A retrospective case-control study of ladder fall accidents.
